Modern day Nameology..

Names are the first Unique Identification code for Humans and are in use since biblical times or even before.. Until recent times, to prove the identity we use our names in conjunction with father's name and date of birth. It’s a fool proof identification method followed for centuries.
Every baby born in the world is assigned with the unique identification code, in a grand manner in the presence of friends and relatives. The names are selected in such a way that it is meaningful and is believed the names highly influence the character of a person. The process of selecting names goes like this, many names are selected and then shortlisted, given a meaningful thought before the name has been given to a child.
In present days nameology is a multi-million Industry involving Name Database, Astrology, Numerology etc... Astrologers suggest starting letter of the name based on the stars . Parents visit the baby names dictionary websites to select the names based on starting letter and other criteria. Once selected next stop is the numerologist where the spelling of the names are decided based on lucky numbers and stars. In all these process the very aim to have a meaningful name has been given low priority.
Recently came across a name which shall be spelt “Surya” which means sun, but numerology has its own spelling dictionary “Sooryyaa”. I read it sorry-yaa, You will never be able to pronounce the name correctly without the help of the person himself.
It reminds of an old movie comedy sequence
Comedy duo Goundamani and Senthil go for a function, and they were asked to name a baby
Comedy duo Goundamani and Senthil go for a function, and they were asked to name a baby
Goundamani : வாயில நுழையுற மாதிரி ஒரு பெயர் சொல்லு செந்தில்
Senthil: முறுக்கு
Goundamani : நல்லாயில்ல.. சரி காதுல நுழையுற மாதிரி ஒரு பெயர் சொல்லு செந்தில்
Senthil : குச்சி
It’s not only Indians who experiment with name but Westerners are also masters in that. In British nameology they simply add son to the father's name( Anderson, Williamson, Jefferson, Peterson), or count and add son( Sevenson, Elevenson) or add their profession as second name( John Cutter, Ian Smith). Though its funny, Its a reflection of what they are.
Names can be given with various pronunciation, spelling and logic but it needs to be meaningful, reflection of the culture and to an extent describe the character of the person.
