Vellai Illa Patadhari Alias VIP2
Most of the readers from Tamilnadu would know about the title. Those who are not familiar, Its a super hit Tamil movie which translates to "Jobless Graduates". Recently Second series of the movie is also released. Interesting the movies revolves around the Unemployed Civil Engineer who struggles and finds his way to complete the low cost housing project with the help of other unemployed engineers. Surely this post is not a film review but instead trying to put forward the concept and core of the movie of being an engineering graduate(VIP)
In 1980's the movie "Varumaiyin Niram Sigapu" talks about the unemployment problem faced by graduates in India, how they pass their days with hunger and the atrocities faced by them. Similarly the film 'Three Idiots'(Hindi) and 'Nanban'(Tamil)talks about the education system which the Indian society believes to be a success formulae. Those who have watched both films, VIP and Three idiots, will be puzzled and may find hard to correlate.. Read till the end to know..
In late 90's with technology boom, the need for skilled professionals increased, many engineering colleges were opened to cater the growth of the industry. Today top MNC's around the world are packed with Indian breed of engineers. Many students aspire to become engineers as demand for Indian Engineers in the worldwide job market rocketed.
Recently I was reading the Newspaper and was shocked to know that 50% of the engineering seats for the year 2017 are vacant in Tamilnadu alone. Tamilnadu has 500 odd Engineering colleges with 1,50,000 seats out of which 75,000 seats are vacant. After a bit of analysis, I learnt due to lesser demand for Engineers in the job market, students opt for other courses than engineering. Engineers land in clerical job to earn their lively hood. If engineers start to occupy the jobs in banks, Government offices, clerical jobs, what would be the fate of other discipline graduates who solely depend on regular white collar job.
Doctor can't replace an Engineer, Engineer can't replace lawyer, Lawyer can't replace doctor, likewise no other professional can replace a doctor, engineer or a lawyer. Professional Technical education is aimed to create Entrepreneurship which in-turn create more blue and white collar jobs. The very purpose was defeated and Engineers cause depletion of white collar jobs.
I don't consider doctors, engineers lawyers as white collars, as the nature of job is not repetitive. I name them Elite collars(Very Important Person) shouldering the responsibility of creating more jobs.

What impressed me is the story line of VIP, though imaginative puts forward the benefit of collective entrepreneurship which can help to find cost effective solution, showcase the right attitude, being creative and innovative. Does this talents happen naturally.. No.. Institutions has to implant in the mind of engineers but How??
Hey why your standing here go to library.. read.. memorize...get good marks.. attend campus interviews find job before completing the course.. is what present institutions preach and teach. Such strategies won't create entrepreneurs, instead will create regular white collars.. Three idiots exactly spoke about it.. Passion, attitude, knowledge... Both films revolve around Engineers. Three Idiots highlights the importance of the reformation required in the education system. VIP and VIP2 highlights the reformation required in the mindset of Engineers.
Though everyone cannot become entrepreneurs, engineers need to opt for more professional job than a regular white collar job. The supply and demand in any market is dynamic which oscillates. Its high time to revolutionize the technical education.
State and Central Governments shall create more conducive environment throughout the country so that more and more professionals are encouraged to pursue entrepreneurship. Hope this post inspires more and more young Engineers to take Entrepreneurship seriously.

Allywn you got me curious
ReplyDeleteCuriosity leads to exploring which leads to invention..
DeleteThanks for the curiosity
The real problem is that right from school days, the majority is forced to focus to "do engineering-get any job- marry-multiply -force the next generation to repeat."
ReplyDeleteThis wheel must be broken. Creativity must be respected , motivated and entertained.
For this to happen, we need a scoring system wherein admission into any college is given at any age for any number of degrees and students in addition to doing their regular stuff, must prove their entrepreneurship skills. Then a degree with immediate job placement should be provided.
As in, companies shouldn't be doing their regular campus interviews, but recruit such graduates.
#WhatSay?
Well said Umar.. Every graduation program shall have target work hours where student get to know the job in real time.. May it be Implant training, Apprenticeship etc.. number of hours shall be completed before receiving the degree
DeleteHey keep posting such good and meaningful articles.
